Obituary: Gary Weldon Grandy, March 11, 1938 – August 16, 2024

Gary Weldon Grandy, age 86, of Richmond, Utah, passed away on August 16, 2024, in North Logan, Utah from complications of a stroke. He was born on March 11, 1938, in Montpelier, Idaho, to Weldon Emil Grandy and Mary Anona Bird.

Gary spent his formative years working on various ranches in Paris, Idaho, graduating from Fielding High School in 1956. That summer he worked at the Palisades Dam, Idaho site for the Bureau of Reclamation as an Engineering Aid. He attended the University of Utah for two years and then served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the German-speaking Swiss-Austrian Mission. He married his love, LaVon Gillette, on January 29, 1962. That same year he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting from Brigham Young University.

He served for six years in the United States Army with the 142nd Military Intelligence Linguist Company of the Utah National Guard.

Throughout his life, Gary held various professional positions, including Accountant at United States Steel Corporation in Orem, Utah; Comptroller for Grand Targhee Ski Resort in Wyoming; Administrator of Teton Valley Hospital in Idaho (including Office Manager for Dr. Kitchener Head); and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Petersburg Medical Center in Petersburg, Alaska. He also served on several state and national boards in various capacities, as well as a City Manager, City Councilman, and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

His personal side-jobs included owning and operating three large ranches throughout his life-two in Idaho (Teton Valley and Coeur D'Alene) and one in Montana (Mission Valley)-as well as a grocery store for three years in Victor, Idaho.

Gary was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in numerous church callings (lay clergy), including as a Bishop, Branch President, and three Stake callings. As well, he and his wife served an 18-month mission to German- speaking Munich, Germany. He often shared his testimony of Jesus Christ with family, friends, and at church.

Gary cherished the outdoors, finding solace riding 4-wheelers and horses; farming and ranching (registered Charolais cattle); and working in his forested land gathering firewood, piling and burning brush. He also authored or co- authored three books on his family's history. He had

a dedicated work ethic- being known by his family as a workaholic-which sometimes gave him an intense personality. Being quite a serious person, he occasionally joked, but made no room for "Nonsense!"

Gary is survived by his loving wife, LaVon; children: Trenton (Dana) Grandy, Shawna (Ken) Merrill, Lance Grandy, Regan (Amy) Grandy; and foster children Susan McCabe and Willy Pay Pay. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Janice, Mary Lee, and Margean.

A viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Paris, Idaho Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at webbmortuary.com
