Previously printed in the Pilot's Aug. 15 edition, a big black bear went through the Petersburg Airport Subdivision the night of Saturday, Aug. 10, looking for an easy meal inside any unsecured garbage cans. Luis Silva's motion activated camera picked up the bear struggling to get into this 300-gallon garbage can that was secured with ratchet straps. Public Works Director Chris Cotta told the Pilot that "this is the large bear that we suspect is causing most of the problems that are being reported." He said, "This bear is large enough that even if you have your can strapped down, it can break into the can and destroy the can."
While the black bears on Mitkof Island usually eat their fill of natural resources like blueberries and salmon before it's time to hibernate, unsecured garbage cans in Petersburg tempt the animals with a buffet of easy eats.
Black bears have made their trek to town, breaking into a number of garbage bins and stashing litter over the past several weeks. Local authorities on the situation stress that abiding by borough law and properly securing garbage is essential to deterring bears from town.
