This Ravenstail robe titled, "All our ancestors lead us through colonized trauma to calm waters," was completed by Debra Dzijúksuk O'Gara in May 2024. Before being displayed in the Juneau-Douglas City Museum for summer of 2024, the robe was danced in Juneau at what was described by acclaimed weaver Lily Hope as the largest gathering of Ravenstail robes in history.
When Ravenstail and Chilkat weaving nearly disappeared, it was saved by a small handful of dedicated artisans. Now, a Petersburg weaver has won a $20,000 business grant to help revive this traditional artform.
Dzijúksuk (Debra O'Gara), a raven frog from the cedar bark house of the Teeyhittaan clan, was selected as one of two winners in Spruce Root's 2024 Path to Prosperity competition. The artist's business, Raven's Nest Regalia and Arts, will focus on creating traditional regalia for sale, teaching a new generation of weavers, and supporting O'Gara's larger weaving projects.
